Risk Management Assisted Setup
4 minute read
The Risk Management Assisted Setup wizard walks you through the minimum configuration needed to start using Risk Management: number series, a likelihood/impact scale, risk score zones, risk categories, and starter risk templates. It’s the fastest way to get a new company ready to score risks, and it’s safe to re-run later if you want to review or adjust the configuration.
When to use it
Run the wizard when:
- You’re setting up Risk Management in a new company and haven’t configured any of the setup pages yet.
- You want a recommended scale and score zones instead of building them field by field.
- You want to review your existing configuration and optionally replace it with a recommended preset.
Note
You need Modify permission on Risk Management Setup (theRISK ADMIN RMYME permission set) to run the wizard. Without it, you won’t see the Set up Risk Management action, and opening the wizard directly shows an error. To run the Assisted Setup wizard
Do one of the following:
- On the Risk Management Setup page, choose Set up Risk Management.
- Choose the 🔎 icon, enter Assisted Setup, choose the related link, and then select Set up Risk Management from the Getting Started group.
The wizard opens and guides you through the following steps.
Numbering
Set Risk Nos. and Template Risk Nos. — the number series used for live risks and template risks. Both fields come pre-filled with recommended series (RISK and RISKTMPL); a series is only created when you choose Finish, so nothing is written yet. If a series already exists, it’s kept unless you deliberately choose a different one. You’ll be asked to confirm before it’s replaced.
Both fields are required. You can’t move past this step with either one blank.
Risk scale
Choose a Scale: 3 Levels, 5 Levels, 7 Levels, or Custom. Choosing 3, 5, or 7 replaces the Likelihood and Impact Level lists on the next two steps with a matching recommended set. Choosing Custom leaves the lists as they are so you can build your own.
Note
If Likelihood or Impact Levels already exist, selecting a scale size asks whether to replace them with the recommended scale. Declining keeps your existing levels.Likelihood Levels and Impact Levels
Review or edit the recommended Code, Description, and Numeric Weight for each level, or enter your own if you chose Custom. At least one level is required in each list, and Numeric Weight must be unique and greater than zero within each list. The wizard blocks Next with a specific error if either condition isn’t met.
See Scoring Setup for what these fields mean.
Risk Score Zones
Review or edit the recommended score zones, or choose Use recommended zones to apply the set that matches your selected scale. Together, the zones must cover every possible score with no gaps or overlaps, and each zone needs a Display Style and a Review Interval greater than zero. The wizard checks this before letting you continue and identifies the exact score or the two conflicting zones if something’s missing.
See Risk Score Zones for what these fields mean.
Risk Categories
Review or edit the list, or choose Use recommended categories to add the starter set: Financial, Schedule, Resource, Operational, Compliance, and Security. At least one category is required.
Starter Template Sets
Choose which starter Risk Template Sets to create: General Project Risks, General Customer Risks, General Vendor Risks, General Item Risks, and General Resource Risks. All five are selected by default. Each set’s risks are created as templates only, no live risks are added to your risk register.
See Risk Templates for how to use these sets afterward.
Finish
The final step summarizes everything you’ve configured. Choose Finish to apply it. The wizard validates the whole configuration one more time and, if everything checks out, creates any missing number series and writes the levels, zones, categories, and selected template sets in one operation. If validation fails, nothing is saved and you stay on the wizard to fix it.
After Finish, use the links on the page to jump to Risk Management Setup, the Risk List, or Risk Templates.
Overdue risk review and mitigation action email reminders aren’t part of this wizard. You can configure them afterward from Risk Management Setup. See Reminders.
Reopening the wizard
You can run the wizard again at any time from Risk Management Setup. It loads your current numbering, levels, zones, and categories into the same steps, so you can review them or replace them with a recommended preset.
Note
A Likelihood Level, Impact Level, or Risk Score Zone already used by an existing risk can’t be replaced or removed. The wizard blocks the change and tells you which record is in use. Remove or reassign the risks first if you want to change the underlying scale.Cancelling
If you close the wizard before choosing Finish and setup isn’t already complete, you’re asked to confirm. Closing without finishing discards everything you entered and makes no changes to your configuration.
